LTCFA is happy to announce the 2019 Scholarship to the following applicants:
Jessica Dulphe
Jessica came to this country from Haiti four years ago. In Haiti she studied accounting for 2 years. However, once she came to the US her vision changed. She realized that she had to work very hard to succeed. She did not read and write English language. She had to start ESL and at the same time was enrolled in CNA program. To her surprise she loved taking care of residents. Her goals in life changed and she is now determined to be a nurse. She went to Mass Bay Community college to get her prerequisites, at the same time working as a CNA at Waterview Lodge for past 3 years. Due to her very hard work she was successful in getting admitted to Regis College for a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. In her essay Jessica writes: “If I win this LTCFA’s scholarship, it will make a very big difference for me and serve my purpose.” Jessica received her scholarship check early October. She expressed her gratitude to LTCFA for this opportunity.
Mackenzie Garvey
Mackenzie received a stethoscope as a Christmas Gift when she was a little girl. She was so fascinated by this gift that she refused to take this stethoscope off her neck no matter where she went. She envisioned that wearing a stethoscope around her neck will make everyone around her healthy. When she was eight years old, she visited hospital to see her new born sister. She was fascinated by nurses and thought they were super heroes. That was the time she decided that someday she wanted to be a Nurse. She started out her career as Dietary Aide at the age of 15 years of age at Newfield House, a long term, Dementia Care facility. She had not forgotten about being a nurse. Soon she became a CNA. She stated in her essay that she was so impressed by elderly residents, who were full of wisdom, advice, stories and their lives that she felt close to them to the extent that on her junior prom day she stopped at the facility all dressed up to show the residents her dress, hair and makeup. This gesture made residents happy. She writes: “The smiles on their faces made me ultra-happy.” She could not just stop there. She enrolled herself at U. Mass Dartmouth Bachelor of Science Nursing program and could not wait to be a Super Hero for geriatric residents who need her care. She states that “this LTCFA Scholarship will help me to attain my goal quicker and I will be very thankful.”
Yvonne Kodua Lamptey
Yvonne came to United States from Ghana. Her passion for Nursing and caring began when her grandmother had stroke and became bedridden for many years. She felt that she could do more for her grandmother but had no nursing skills. There were no Skilled Nursing Care Facilities in Ghana. As she narrates in her Essay, it was quite struggle to take care of her grandmother. She came to this country in 2013. She became a CNA working very hard at Notre Dame Long Term Care facility in Worcester and taking care of 2 children at home age 7 years and 3 years old. This was not enough for her. She was impressed by Nurses who put in tremendous amount of efforts to help sick residents get better and get rehabilitation. She wanted to be a nurse and join the nurses who make a difference in lives of elderly. She is now admitted into Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Anna Maria College in Paxton, Ma. She continues to work as a CNA to help with college expenses. Yvonne is very grateful that she has been successful in winning this LTCFA Scholarship.
